Hey guys, so I recently received my certificate (which might
I add I was/am sooo happy about!) and I thought I'd share a little bit about why I chose this school and what I thought of it overall.
I enrolled for a course at The London School of Makeup (LSM),
which is in Oxford Circus and so close to Topshop and H&M, in June. Before
that, I had gone on the web and checked a few other makeup schools before
finally deciding to join them because 1) from their
website they seemed more thorough with their lessons 2) students have to pass
two external exams as well as hand in coursework before receiving their
certificate 3) you get an actual certificate
that is internationally recognised (read more about the certification here)
The third reason pretty much cinched the deal for me because
I knew that I wanted a proper certificate that would enable me to be employed
as a makeup artist or freelance as one. The year before I had signed up for a
makeup course and I learned a lot about being a makeup artist but the document
I got wasn’t a proper document per se and it didn’t give me the recognition as
a makeup artist. Also, the duration of the course was too short in my opinion,
I needed more time to practice, hone my craft and most importantly feel
confident with my skills. While I was at LSM, I practiced on a different person
every day, had to complete face sheets and had to have done at least one of
each skin type (young and mature) and skin tone (light, medium and dark).
What I learned and what I experienced on this course is
invaluable. Gaining experience to become a professional makeup artist is really
important (and you never stop learning and gaining experience in this field). A
lot of what I learned at the school, I wouldn’t have been able to get by myself
or from other resources, which is why I think if you seriously want to become a
professional makeup artist, you have to enroll for a proper course because there’s more
to it than you think, especially when it comes to hygiene and avoiding cross
contamination (something I never worried about before). I had to also hand in a courswork/portfolio that included completed face sheets, work log, business proposal and make up kit budget - and I am very proud of my coursework/portfolio because it's the bomb if I do say so myself, I worked very hard on it to make sure it was excellent. But my point is that the school does help set you up in to the makeup business. In masterclasses I think
it’s more focused on helping you improve the makeup you do on yourself and not
so about doing other people’s makeup, which is great if that is what you’re
after.
Also you get to meet
other people who are into makeup just as much as you do! I’ll admit I was
worried whether I was going to get on with the other girls in the class (before
even meeting them lol), but fortunately I got along great with all of them
(okay except the one but she was a special case and I don’t want to get in to
that) and am so glad to have shared this experience with them. The best part is
that we all passed the exams! So no one was left out when we were celebrating
at a pub nearby the school (that would’ve been really awkward).

When the course ended I was really sad because I had such a
great time and it also meant that I wouldn’t be seeing the girls on a regular
basis anymore. We all still keep in touch on whatsapp which is great but it’s
not the same as being together in a room everyday for two weeks. I would
definitely recommend the school to anyone who is seriously looking to become a
professional makeup artist and I would definitely go there again for their
other courses (am actually planning to already
)
